Naville Numismatics presents its Live Auction 80. The auction will close on Sunday 2nd April 2023, 16.00 UK time, at which time the live session will begin. Absentee bidders can bid electronically through Naville Numismatics website from the day the sale is published online up to the start of the live session. The auction features a selection of 881 lots of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Modern coins, all chosen with contribution from NAC’s experts.

Lot 80: Greek. Bruttium, Caulonia. Nomos, circa 450-445. Nicely toned, Extremely Fine/About Extremely Fine. Starting price: 300 GBP.

The sale includes a selection of coins from the collection of a Mentor. This first section of the sale starts with an interesting selection of silver and bronzes of Magna Grecia and Sicily, such as a rare bronze of Heraclea, a well preserved nomos of Poseidonia, a nice nomos of Caulonia, a rare nomos of Croton, a rare bronze of Messana from the Moretti collection, a rare didrachm of Motya. Moreover in this part, there are a well preserved siglos of Lydia, a rare stater of Lycia (Ex NAC 25, 190), an exceedingly rare tetrobol of Lycia, a well preserved stater of Tarsus (Ex Auctiones 6, 1976, 263), a well preserved tetradrachm of Tigranes, a small series of drachms and quinarii of the Himyarites, and even beyond a selection of Hellenistic coins and a series of coins of Tarentum, Metapontum, Macedonia, Athens, Corinth, Seleucid kings, Phoenicia, Egypt and Mauretania. Noteworthy in this section is a stater of Diodotos I, king of Bactria.

Lot 520: Roman Republic. C. Numonius Vaala. Denarius, circa 43. Very rare, nice old cabinet tone and Good Very Fine/Very Fine. From the Scipio collection. Starting price: 1,000 GBP.

The Roman selection boasts an interesting series of Roman Republican bronzes and a striking array of denarii. This includes a well preserved denarius of C. Antesti, a nice denarius of Cn. Lucretius Trio, a well preserved denarius of P. Fouriu Crassipes, a rare denarius of C. Vibius C.f. Cn. Pansa Caetronianus (ex NAC 92, 379) and a very rare and well preserved denarius of C. Numonius Vaala (ex Aureo & Calicò 94, 1998, 64. From the Scipio collection).

The Imperial selection of the sale features an attractive series of Augustus and also an attractive selection of Roman bronzes and silver coins such as an aureus of Tiberius, a rare denarius of Germanicus, a wonderful tetradrachm of Commodus, an aureus of Septimius Severus, an aureus of Caracalla, a rare and interesting series of consecratio antoniniani of Trajan Decius, an interesting denarius of Tetricus II counterfeit by Becker from the E.E. Clain-Stefanelli collection, and a selection of follis from the Rauceby Hoard, found in Lincolnshire, July 2017 (submitted for consideration as Treasure and returned to the finders. PAS ID: LIN-F6D516. BM Ref: 2017 T649), even beyond an interesting selection of Solidi, Denari, Antoniniani, Sesterti, Dupondi, Asses and Folles. Very remarkable in this part are a rare aureus of Faustina II, a very rare antoninianus of Divo Nigriniano and an extremely rare antoninianus of Julian I of Pannonia. The Roman Provincial part of the sale includes a selection from the Dattari Collection.
